Let's start with the good news – everything went well, nothing broke, and my stuff arrived intact. I did a shipping from NYC to Lisbon. Now, a few tips for those thinking of doing the same – the process is a bit stressful regardless which company you hire, it will always cost more than you initially thought because the estimate is one thing, but once your items are in the container, that's when the actual volume is known. So, if you're really counting every penny, maybe it's not for you. I ended up spending an extra $2K because my sofa was large and I sent 3 extra boxes. Also, expect possible delays – it's normal. My things arrived in about 4 months, exactly what I was expecting. I'm sharing my experience to help others, since I had never done this before. Shipping our lives from the US to the UK - uuuug! I am just at the beginning of the process so will update when the cargo aka our stuff arrives at its destination. However, so far the worst of the pain was taken from us by NY International Shipping and by Ryan and Jamie who collected our stuff and worked like Trojans to do it on a hot and sticky August evening. I felt confident that they were also being careful with those large items we hadn't packed ourselves. They would have packed everything in fact and if this were a "lock, stock, and barrel" move (it's not!), I'd have been delighted to let them at it.
